Starting his medical career at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany, he has been treating HIV patients with neurological manifestations in various university hospitals, the latest being the university hospital at Hamburg, Germany. Here he completed his scientific studies for the "Habilitation" (a prerequisite for being appointed professor in Germany) on the field of the replication dynamics of HIV and the effect of HAART in the CNS. Apart from this Christian Eggers published on the fields of HIV dementia and neurological opportunistic infections such as PML, Toxoplasmosis and CNS lymphoma. He has been editor for a consensus paper of the German Neuro-AIDS study Group (www.dnaa.de), and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and abstracts. He is a lecturer at the university hospital at Hamburg and is currently conducting research on the nucleic acid sequence of the V3 loop of CNS and plasma viruses, the course of dementia-associated leukoencephalopathy, the pharmacokinetics of antiviral substances in the CSF, and on anti-myelin antibodies in HIV dementia.
